What do I get for referring someone?

You earn 5,000 VP for every friend who signs up through your link, verifies a phone number, and joins a squad or subscribes. On top of that there are milestone bonuses: +2,000 VP at 3 invites, +10,000 VP at 10, and VIP status at 25.

Referrals pay in VP, VERGR's rank points. VP is not something you spend and lose, it permanently counts toward your rank, and a higher rank lowers the commission you pay whenever you convert Coins to Gems. So every referral keeps paying off long after your friend joins.
