How do I start a group chat?
From Messages, start a new group, give it a name, and pick at least two people to add. Your member list is built from people you follow and people who follow you, and you can also search anyone by username. The group opens as soon as you create it, and you become its admin.
A group chat is one thread with several people in it. You create it, name it, and choose who is in it. The person who creates the group is its first admin, which means you can rename it later, change its photo, add or remove people, and decide whether everyone can post.
Create a group
- Open Messages.
- Start a new group (New Group).
- Type a group name.
- Add members. Your network (people you follow and people who follow you) is listed for you to tick, or search anyone by username.
- You need a name and at least two other members. Tap Create.
- The group opens straight away and everyone you added is in it.
Who you can add
The ready-made list is your own network: the people you follow plus the people who follow you. That keeps it quick to pull in the people you actually talk to. If you want to add someone outside that, just type their username in the search box and they will appear.
Minimum group size is you plus two others. If you only want to talk to one person, send them a direct message instead.
Can I rename the group or change its photo later?
Yes. Open the group, go to Group Info, and tap the name or the photo. Only admins can change these.
Can I add more people after creating it?
Yes. Group Info has an Add button (admins only). See the article on adding and removing people.
