Assessing the PlayStation 5 Version of Starfield

Bethesda’s ambitious space-faring RPG has finally arrived on PlayStation 5, offering an experience that diverges significantly from the studio’s established legacy with the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises. While the game provides a vast universe to traverse, it fails to capture the seamless exploration that defined its predecessors. Rather than providing a cohesive, singular open world, the adventure is segmented across hundreds of distinct locations, which unfortunately highlights the game's greatest weakness: the space travel itself.

Despite being in a better state than at launch, the title struggles to replicate the immersive magic of Bethesda’s previous open-world epics. Players looking for the dense, interconnected exploration found in Skyrim will likely find the fragmented design jarring and disconnected. While the game has certainly seen improvements, it remains a fundamentally different type of experience, ultimately proving that venturing into the stars does not always equate to the same level of discovery that terrestrial RPGs offer. The result is a mechanically sound but hollow journey that often feels like it is fighting against its own scope, leaving players with a polished yet divisive product that misses the mark on what made the developer's earlier catalog so iconic.
