Avalanche Studios Co-Founder Reflects on Canceled Project AionGuard
Avalanche Studios, the Swedish developer recognized for the Just Cause franchise and the 2015 adaptation of Mad Max, has a history marked by nearly as many scrapped projects as finished titles. Among these abandoned ventures, the hybrid World War I, medieval, and fantasy game known as AionGuard remains the most significant regret for co-founder and former Chief Creative Officer Christofer Sundberg.
In a recent discussion with PC Gamer, Sundberg revisited his tenure at the studio, which concluded in 2019, while also highlighting his current work on the title Samson, now being developed and published by Liquid Swords. Despite the focus on his new endeavor, Sundberg expressed lingering frustration regarding the 2009 termination of AionGuard. He noted that the project was abruptly halted via a text message from an unnamed publisher, an event that clearly left a lasting impression. The game was envisioned as a major, ambitious production, yet it never moved past its developmental stage, ultimately becoming one of the many casualties in the studio’s extensive history of unreleased concepts.
